HEY KINEVO

Few use cases demonstrate the suitability of voice control as effectively as the KINEVO 900, a state-of-the-art microscope designed specifically for neurosurgery.

Even now, many tasks during brain surgeries are carried out by the circulating nurse based on the surgeon's spoken instructions: "take a photo", "change the filter", "start video recording".

A microphone can be integrated into the microscope housing near the surgeon's mouth to capture their voice perfectly.

Surgeons typically have instruments in both hands, which they are reluctant to set aside, and often prefer not to move at all during surgery.

This project focused on evaluating potential voice commands, integrating voice control into an existing interface, and conducting initial acceptance tests with surgeons. After numerous attempts using real speech recognition in the prototype, I ultimately opted for a Wizard of Oz prototype, which only simulated speech recognition but allowed for much greater flexibility. During the tests, the surgeons didn’t realize that the speech recognition was simulated.
